Dec 19, 2022

Niagara Falls, New York- Joyce Lynum Flournoy Frett, earned a Master of Arts degree in Child & Family Studies from Syracuse University’s College of Human Development, and her Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Cornell University’s College of Arts and Sciences. Her studies included literature, psychology, and Africana studies as well. Joyce’s career is centered around early childhood family education, human services and public health. She began her career in Syracuse, returning home to Niagara Falls to work with pregnant and parenting adolescents. Moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota proved to be a wise decision. You Thanks to her many relatives who shared her interests, she quickly made valuable connections at the community, school district, city, county and state levels. After four years as a director for a not for profit child care center she was hired by Minneapolis Special School District No. 1 as a Resource Teacher, playing a major role in the development of the structure, philosophy, curriculum, professional development requirements and hiring. Her duties included supervision of sites and staff citywide in the newly funded Early Childhood Family Education program while also teaching parents and their children from pregnancy through school entry. During her tenure she attended the University of Minnesota and St Cloud State University and earned several teaching certificates. She retired and returned to Niagara Falls to raise her children around her nuclear family. She did substitute teaching until she was hired by Health Systems Niagara to oversee their Community Oriented Primary Care grant. She also incorporated a not for profit agency with her husband in which they did grant writing and workshops aimed at improving outcomes for underserved populations. Her honors include a Fellowship at Syracuse University, and another at The Minneapolis Foundation funded by The National Center for Children in Poverty at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. She was also selected to be a member of the first group to receive a Train the Trainer Certificate from The Culturally Relevant Anti-Bias Education Leadership Project led by Louise Derman Sparks from Pacific Oaks College. Joyce is currently retired and still has the interest in lifelong learning and innovation in early education and parenting. She is available for consultation and lectures on any of the above mentioned areas.
